Third Graders Leading the Way of Love in Wyoming County

Bishop Steve and Canon Cathy visited Holy Apostles’ Perry and Trinity Warsaw on Sunday, November 16, where they learned about a heart-warming ice cream contest that took place in Wyoming County this past spring. What began as a fun community activity revealed an unexpected—and very Christ-like—act of generosity from two local third graders.

Each year, Yummies, a beloved homemade ice cream shop in Warsaw, hosts its Sweet 16 flavor bracket, inviting public-school students to dream up new ice-cream creations. The winning flavor earns a permanent spot on Yummies’ menu. This year’s contest, held in April, received an impressive 400 submissions.

The 2025 finalists were both third graders:

Roarin’ Raspberry Ripple, created by Warsaw student Reese McClurg, a brownie-based ice cream with raspberry swirls and graham crackers.

Rue’s Minty Goo, created by Attica’s Ruth Hess, a mint ice cream with M&Ms and marshmallow.

To make voting more meaningful, Yummies made all 16 semifinal flavors available for tasting. For a $2 donation, visitors sampled each creation and cast a secret ballot. All proceeds were designated for the winning school’s Snack Pack Program, which provides food support for students in need.

But before a single vote was cast, Reese and Ruth made a decision that changed everything: they asked the shop to split the prize money evenly between both schools, ensuring no one would go without support—no matter whose flavor won.

Their simple act of compassion transformed the contest from a friendly competition into an example of the selfless love we are called to embody.
