Standing Committee Visits Genesis Center, Supports Gala Goal

Earlier this month, members of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Western New York traveled to Buffalo’s South Side to witness firsthand the life-changing ministry of the Genesis Center, a mission of St. Simon’s Episcopal Church. Archdeacon Diana Lieker, the Rev. Dan Pinti, Larry Mazuchowski, and Denise Clarke-Merriweather were warmly welcomed by the Genesis Center team and toured the building that has become a beacon of hope for the community. The visitors saw the bustling food pantry and meal program in action, places where hundreds of neighbors each week receive nourishment, dignity, and compassion.

As part of their visit, the Standing Committee members presented a $1,500 check from the Discreationary account to the Genesis Center to help complete its $10,000 fundraising goal from the recent Gala, which brought together over 135 supporters to honor the Trustees of the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation for their decade of investment in the Center’s mission. The additional gift from the Standing Committee ensured the campaign reached its target.

“The Genesis Center embodies the Gospel call to feed the hungry and serve those in need,” said Archdeacon Lieker. “Seeing the work happening here was deeply moving. It is a joy for us to offer our support as a Standing Committee on behalf of the whole diocese.”

From humble beginnings in the basement of St. Simon’s Episcopal Church, the Genesis Center has grown into a vital hub, providing more than 800 hot meals each week and groceries to more than 1,000 people every month. The ministry serves the unhoused, veterans, single-parent households, the elderly, and working families who are struggling to make ends meet.

The Standing Committee’s visit highlighted the deep connection between parish-based ministries like the Genesis Center and the wider diocesan community. By witnessing, encouraging, and sharing resources, the diocese participates in Christ’s transforming work across Western New York.
