Our diocese licenses lay people to serve in a variety of roles. To become licensed, an individual must be a confirmed communicant in good standing within the diocese and complete the recommended course of study for the license they seek. 

Lay person may study to become licensed in any of the following areas:

Administrator - licensed by the Bishop and appointed by the clergy and vestry to serve as custodian of parochial records, when appropriate to administer the operation of a parish or mission, and be responsible for the completion of all reports that are required in compliance with Diocesan and ECUSA Canons.

Brent School Courses Required: ADM101; CCS010; CCS011.
Recommended for further study: ADM201.


Catechist - licensed by the Bishop and appointed by the clergy and vestry to guide the discipleship formation of the faith community, including preparation for the
sacraments and training of teachers.

Brent School Courses Required: CCS010; CCS011; EDU101; EDU102; HIS111; HIS113; LIT101; LIT102 SCRIP101; SCRIP102; THEO101; THEO102.
Recommended for further study: EDU Series.


Eucharistic Minister - A person licensed by the Bishop and appointed by the clergy and vestry to distribute either the consecrated bread or wine to the people during the celebration of the Eucharist.

Brent School Courses Required: LIT015 (directed study). Inquire of your local clergy.
Recommended for further study: - LIT101; LIT102; LIT103.


Eucharistic Visitor - A person licensed by the Bishop and appointed by the clergy and vestry to carry Communion from the gathered community in a timely manner to members
who are ill or infirm.

Brent School Courses Required: LIT016 (directed study). Contact your local clergy.
Recommended for further study: PC101; CCS010; CCS011


Lector
(Reader) - authorized by the Rector/Vicar/Priest-in-Charge to read Scripture at a service of the Church. Preparation is arranged through your priest.

Required: Contact your local clergy.
Recommended for further study: LIT110.
 

Pastoral Care Minister - licensed by the Bishop and appointed by the clergy and vestry to be serve as leader and coordinator of the community’s caring ministries responding to crises or grief and coordinating the efforts of the faith community to respond.

Brent School Courses Required: CCS010; CCS011; CCS130; EDU101; EDU102; LIT101; PC101; SCRIP101; SCRIP102; THEO102;
Recommended for further study: EDU 102.

 
Preacher - licensed by the Bishop and appointed by the clergy and vestry to be a communicator of the Good News following the proclamation of God’s Word in any
prayer office of the church.

Brent School Courses Required: CCS010; CCS011; EDU101; EDU102; CH1O1; CH102; CH103; LIT101; LIT102; LIT103; LIT104; PC101; SCRIP101; SCRIP102; SCRIP103; THEO101; THEO102; THEO103;
Recommended for further study: SCRIP200 Series; THEO200 Series; any 300 level courses.

 
Teacher - instructs others in a church or ministry setting.

Brent School Courses Required: CCS010 and/or CCS011.
Recommended for further study: EDU101 and EDU102; LIT101; any 100 level courses.


Worship Leader - licensed by the Bishop and appointed by the clergy and vestry to serve as the officiant for any prayer office of the Church in which a clergy person is not required by the Book of Common Prayer.
Brent School Courses Required: CCS010; CCS011; EDU101; LIT101; LIT102; LIT103; LIT104; PC101; SCRIP101; SCRIP102.
Recommended for further study: CH103; LIT104; THEO103.

 

After licensing the individual functions under the direction of a cleric or other leader responsible for oversight of the congregation or other community of faith.

Those who wish to obtain a lay license or who, having been previously licensed in another diocese, wish to continue in a licensed ministry here should consult with their parish priest or warden.
